I posted some pictures on Facebook and have had several people ask me about my stairs, so here is the scoop.
Over the years, I have come to greatly dislike carpet. It seems no matter how many times you vacuum and shampoo it, it is still dirty. After fourteen years of kids, dogs, cats and a husband, the carpet on my stairs was more than a bit disgusting. One cold evening in January, I was browsing through some of my favorite blogs and came across the most amazingly inexpensive transformation I have seen. Diane took her builder grade carpeted steps and risers and revealed their hidden beauty. You can check out her post here!
Needless to say, my wheels started churning and I thought for sure that I could also do this to my stairs….. and so it began!
Here is a before picture of what my steps looked like with the tired worn carpet. Sing it girls…. U G L Y, you ain’t got no albi you ugly!
Removing the carpet was easy although a bit disgusting. Remember… kids, dogs, cats, a husband and fourteen years worth of wear and tear!
Finally, I was able to start staining. As Diane suggested, it is best to stain first and I am glad I followed her warning. For the section of the steps from the landing to the upstairs bedrooms, I had to do every other step so we could still get upstairs. I simply marked the steps that my family cold walk on to be sure they didn’t forget.
I pretty much used all the products that Diane has used in her tutorial since it appeared that she had great success. I however used a mahogany stain to better match my Santos mahogany floors. I can’t remember if Diane added quarter round to her steps, but I decided I liked the added touch.
So, can you believe that plain old builder pine stairs can look like this!? Me either… I am in love! And, they are so much easier to clean!!
